monthly round up

Went for a 2 mile recovery jog on sunday. Considering it was a recovery jog and I was going incredibly slow, my min/mile time was quicker than before. Weird. But still, it shows i'm improving a lot :)

With riding and running, this month I did 33.83miles. It's not much but that's 33.83miles further than last month and i'll get there eventually. 1847 calories burned :) 17.18 running miles, just over a half marathon. Kind of a scary thought that the running I did over say two weeks has got to be done in one run! Oh well, 139 days until race day :)

My pace has gone from a low of 13:52 when I had walking breaks for 11:00 full running. 12:03 when running the park run with someone else. That's pretty good in just three weeks. I hope I can keep up a pace of 11:00. That would be amazing, a half marathon time of 2h24m. Would be well impressed if I could do that by october considering my original aim was finish before the roads open again, i.e. 3hours.

wow! just realised how long it's been since i've run. I haven't run since last sunday! two bike rides but no running, seriously slacking here :/

got an mp3 player for my birthday, yay! :D

Did the park run, run free event today :)despite the pouring rain. And when I say pouring, I really do mean pouring. I actually couldn't see properly at certain points of the course. Got absolutely soaked and covered in mud but it's all good fun. Managed to jog all of it, even if some of the jogging was on the spot :P. Can't believe that to be fair, didn't think I managed to jog all of it. A time of 37:22 isn't that good but to be fair neither of us have had much training so to jog for that length of time isn't bad going.

bloody stop watches!

not much to say this evening but i want to keep a log of how everything's going.

after the other days hill work, my legs didn't want to play ball so I had to take two days off instead of just the one :/ but still, my legs were refreshed for this evening :)

was still really warm this evening, even at like 20:30 but it was kinda nice, better than thursday's temperature at least. slowed down and upped the running to 7/2 splits. Still not much but I'm getting there, quicker than I thought to be honest :) I hate my stopwatch though. I can't adjust my radio at all with it on and it bloody stopped on me on the last set. I don't even know how long for either! I'm thinking it was only a minute, which would've made my pace 11:18 but it could've been anything from 1-3minutes I think. three minutes would've been a pace of 12:10ish. Aah well, not that I'm too bothered by pace at the moment.

Also, miss my mp3 player, it's okay running along to the radio but I miss my mindless crap :) roll on payday when I can buy another one and put my running tracks on it :)

overall was a good run and i can definitely see improvement, roll on next run day :)

Trail Running

So, my second blog, fifth training run so far. I found the joys (and troubles) of trail running. Okay, so it was only up the local park but it was still flipping hard. Managed 1.5miles in a time of 19minutes ish so not brilliant but still, it's better than sitting in bed doing nothing all day. 149 days and i'll be sh*tting a brick the night before race day. Plenty of time to train :)

I'm not sure what's worse with trail running, uphill or downhill. Uphill was so painful, on the lungs and the knees! Wow! I got out of breath so quickly even going at a snails pace. Flat bits were a welcome and amazing break :)
And coming down, well, I didn't want to go too fast in case I went head over heels rolling down into the field! The woods section was so much nicer, no lumpy bits of grass, just flat trail going steepish downhill, which was lovely :)
Heart beating rather quickly once I'd finished but I still could've kept going. Just decided that because I was back to the playground area, I might as well stop there. There's always another day :) Can't wait to be fair, when's the parents taking him back up there then? :P

But here's a question I was wondering on the way up (and back down) the worst part of the trail. I've been considering buying a pair of trail running shoes, more specifically these: http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/new-balance-womens-840-trail-shoes-p102774#descTabSect1
The link doesn't appear to work but it's easy enough to copy and paste. They are lush! But with the warm weather we've been having lately, which has completely dried out the ground, how, exactly, are the grips on these shoes supposed to make the blindest bit of difference?!

Roll on next run :)

151 days and counting :)

So, I've decided to run the Cardiff Half Marathon on 17th October. That means from today I've got 151 days (or just under 5months) left to train. I can currently run just over 2miles. I could probably go further but I just haven't tried yet.
A time of 28minutes yesterday meant 12:57min miles although for half the time I did walk so not sure what that would equate to in running pace, I think it's roughly 11:30min miles which is pretty cool :) well considering it's only my third run anyway.

Felt perfectly fine after yesterdays run so i went back out again today. I've been hearing a lot about how good chi running is on the runners world forums. It's all about changing the way you run to prevent injury, which can only be a good thing. The book mentions an ideal running cadence (how many times your foot strikes the ground in a minute) of 85-90. That to me sounds like quite a lot so I decided to check it out in the run this afternoon.

WOOHOO!! Improved my time again :) Bloody knackered though and had to slow it down at the end. Managed 2.2miles again, this time in a time of 25minutes. Jog for 5mins, walk for 3mins, do this 3times. Average pace of 11:22, not bad at all. Rough average running pace of 10mins per mile ish. My cadence, well, that wasn't too good. Cadence of 80 although I suppose that's only 5less that in should be. Not too bothered though.

Until next time, nos da :)
